Understanding the problem

What Causes Coolant Leaks?

Most minor coolant leaks develop gradually as materials age. Rubber hoses harden and crack. Radiator seals weaken. Gaskets compress over time and lose their seal. None of these happen suddenly — they develop as weeps and seeps that get progressively worse if ignored.

The cooling system operates under pressure — typically 14-16 PSI at operating temperature. This pressure keeps the coolant boiling point above 100°C and ensures efficient circulation. But it also means that any weakness in a seal, gasket or hose connection will eventually develop into a leak as the pressure cycles with every heat and cool cycle.

Early stage leaks are small — a weep or seep that loses only a small amount of coolant over days or weeks. Left unaddressed they progressively worsen as the leak point erodes further and the pressure continues to work against it. Catching a leak early — before it becomes a significant loss — is always easier and cheaper than dealing with it later.

Honest advice

What Can Forte Radiator Stop Leak Fix — and What Can It Not Fix?

We will be straight with you about this — it matters.

  • Minor weeping and seeping radiator leaks Small leaks from radiator tubes, end tanks and seals where coolant is weeping rather than flowing
  • Hose connection seeps Minor seeping around hose connections and clamps
  • Water pump seal seeps Minor weeping from water pump seals at early stages
  • Head gasket at very early stages Very minor weeping from a head gasket before it becomes a significant leak
  • Major cracks or physical damage A split hose, cracked radiator tank or significant physical damage requires mechanical repair
  • Significant head gasket failure White smoke from the exhaust, coolant in the oil or rapid coolant loss indicate serious head gasket failure — see a mechanic
  • Severe overheating situations If the engine is overheating badly, address the cause before adding any product to the cooling system
The chemistry

How Does Forte Radiator Stop Leak Work?

When the coolant containing Forte Radiator Stop Leak reaches a leak point, the sealing chemistry is activated by contact with air and the change in temperature gradient at the leak. It forms a physical plug that seals the weep from the inside.

Forte Radiator Stop Leak circulates through the entire cooling system with the engine running. In areas of intact cooling system it remains suspended in the coolant without affecting flow or heat transfer. When it reaches a point where coolant is escaping — a weep or seep — the chemistry detects the change in conditions and begins to form a seal.

The sealing material builds up progressively at the leak point, filling the microscopic gap that is allowing coolant to escape. Over time the seal strengthens as more material is deposited — the process takes several heat cycles to fully complete for established leaks.

As a cooling system conditioner it also neutralises the acids that form as antifreeze degrades — protecting aluminium, copper and iron cooling system components against corrosion throughout the entire system, not just at the leak point.

Additive versus mechanic

When Should I Use Forte Radiator Stop Leak and When Should I See a Mechanic?

The honest answer: use Forte Radiator Stop Leak for a slow, minor leak as the first and cheapest step. See a mechanic if the situation is more serious — and know the signs that tell you which is which.

Use Forte Radiator Stop Leak when: coolant level drops slowly over weeks, you can see a slight weep or damp patch but no puddles, there is no white smoke, the engine is not overheating and the coolant is not milky or contaminated with oil.

See a mechanic when: coolant level drops rapidly over days, there is a visible stream or drip rather than a weep, the engine is overheating, there is white or steam-like smoke from the exhaust, the coolant appears milky brown (indicating oil contamination from a serious head gasket issue), or you can see a physical crack or split.

Trying Forte Radiator Stop Leak first on a minor leak is always the logical low-cost first step before committing to workshop repair — if it works you have saved significant money. If it does not fully seal the leak, a mechanic visit is still the next step and no harm has been done.

Instructions

3 Steps to a Restored Cooling System

1
Flush first (recommended)
For best results flush the cooling system first with Forte Bio Degreaser & Cooling System Flush. A clean system allows the sealing chemistry to work most effectively without contamination interference.
2
Add Forte Radiator Stop Leak
Add directly to the cooling system via the expansion tank or radiator filler. No draining required — the product mixes with the existing coolant and circulates through the system immediately.
3
Run to temperature and monitor
Run the engine to normal operating temperature to circulate the product fully. Monitor the coolant level over the following days and heat cycles — the seal builds progressively and may take several heat cycles to fully complete.
The execution protocol — 3 steps to a restored cooling system. Flush with Forte Bio Degreaser, add Forte Radiator Stop Leak, run to operating temperature and monitor.
Common questions

Every question about
Forte Radiator Stop Leak, answered.

Does radiator stop leak actually work?
For the leaks it's designed for — minor seeps and weeps from the radiator, hoses, gaskets and water pump — yes, it seals at the leak point as the coolant circulates. It won't fix a major crack, a failed head gasket showing white smoke or coolant in the oil, or a split hose; those need mechanical repair. For a small, slow leak it's an inexpensive thing to try before a workshop bill.
Can I still drive with a coolant leak?
A small weep where you top up occasionally can usually be driven on short-term while you treat it — but watch the temperature gauge, because a coolant leak can become an overheat that warps the head. If the level drops fast, the car runs hot, or you see steam, stop and don't drive until it's sorted. For a minor leak, sealing it early with Forte Radiator Stop Leak avoids the risk.
How much does it cost to fix a coolant leak?
It depends entirely on the source. A weeping hose or minor gasket seep is cheap — sometimes just a bottle of Forte Radiator Stop Leak. A radiator, water pump or head gasket replacement runs from the low hundreds into four figures with labour. For a genuinely minor leak the additive is the cheapest first step; for a major one, it's mechanical repair.
Will it block my radiator or cooling passages?
No. Forte Radiator Stop Leak is specifically formulated to remain suspended in the coolant during normal circulation and only react at the point of a leak. It will not deposit in or block coolant passages, radiator tubes or the heater matrix in a healthy cooling system.
Is it safe for aluminium engines and cooling systems?
Yes. Forte Radiator Stop Leak is safe for all cooling system materials including aluminium engine blocks and radiators, rubber hoses, plastic expansion tanks and water pump seals. The conditioning chemistry actually provides additional corrosion protection for aluminium components.
How long does it take to work?
Minor leaks may begin to reduce within the first heat cycle. For established leaks the seal builds progressively over several heat cycles — typically 2-5 days of normal driving. Monitor the coolant level over this period. If the leak does not reduce after a week of normal use, the leak may be too significant for additive treatment.
My head gasket is leaking — will Forte Radiator Stop Leak fix it?
Only for very minor, early-stage head gasket weeps — where coolant loss is slight, there is no white smoke, no coolant in the oil and no overheating. A head gasket leak showing any of these symptoms is a serious mechanical failure that requires professional repair. Forte Radiator Stop Leak is not a substitute for head gasket replacement in those cases.
Can I use it as a preventative treatment?
Yes. Added to a fresh antifreeze change, Forte Radiator Stop Leak also functions as a cooling system conditioner — neutralising acids and providing additional corrosion protection throughout the entire system. This can help prevent minor leaks developing in an ageing cooling system.
Should I use it before or after changing my antifreeze?
After — and flush first. The correct sequence is: flush with Forte Bio Degreaser & Cooling System Flush, drain, refill with fresh antifreeze, then add Forte Radiator Stop Leak to the fresh antifreeze. A clean system gives the sealing chemistry the best possible environment to work in.
