What Causes a Differential to Whine or a Gearbox to Become Noisy?

Gear oil does for the drivetrain what engine oil does for the engine. When it degrades — losing viscosity, anti-wear additives and extreme pressure protection — gear teeth and bearings begin to wear and make noise.

Differential and gearbox components operate under extreme pressure and at high sliding speeds. Gear oil forms a protective film between meshing gear teeth that prevents metal-to-metal contact. As oil ages and degrades this film becomes thinner and less effective — gear teeth begin to wear microscopically, bearing surfaces deteriorate and noise develops.

Is Forte Diff & Gear Treatment Worth It?
