Diagnosing your power steering problem
🔊
Whining or moaning when turning
A whining noise — particularly on full lock — indicates the pump is cavitating. Degraded fluid foams and loses viscosity causing the pump to work against air pockets. Progressive damage results.

Stiff or heavy steering when cold
Stiffness that improves as the car warms up is a classic sign of degraded power steering fluid that has lost its cold-weather flow properties. Hardened seals can also contribute to cold stiffness.

Minor power steering fluid leak
A slow drip or weep from the power steering rack, pump or hose connections is often caused by hardened seals that have lost their flexibility. Forte Power Steering Treatment conditions seals to reduce minor leaks.

Over 75,000 miles — fluid never changed
Power steering fluid degrades over time but is rarely included in a standard service. On vehicles over 75,000 miles with fluid never changed, degradation is virtually certain and problems are developing if not already present.

The forgotten fluid

Why Do Power Steering Systems Develop Problems?

Engine oil gets changed. Coolant gets changed. Brake fluid gets changed. But power steering fluid — which does just as demanding a job — is almost never changed, on almost any vehicle.

Power steering fluid works under high pressure and temperature cycles every time you steer. Over time it degrades — its viscosity improvers break down, its anti-wear additives are consumed and its seal conditioning chemistry is depleted. The fluid thickens when cold, foams under pressure and loses its ability to lubricate the pump, rack and all moving components properly.

The seals in the power steering rack, pump and hoses are equally vulnerable. As the fluid loses its seal conditioning properties the rubber seals begin to harden, shrink and lose their flexibility. They stop conforming to metal surfaces properly — and minor leaks develop.

These problems develop progressively. A whining pump working against degraded fluid causes bearing wear. Stiff steering causes drivers to apply more force, increasing system wear. A minor seal leak that is ignored becomes a significant leak. Early intervention with Forte Power Steering Treatment is always cheaper than the alternative.

What it does

What Does Forte Power Steering Treatment Do?

Forte Power Steering Treatment restores the properties that power steering fluid loses over time — viscosity stability, anti-foam protection, seal conditioning and anti-wear performance.
  • Eliminates PAS stiffness, shudder and moaning noiseRestores fluid viscosity and flow properties that cause stiffness and pump cavitation
  • Prevents and reduces power steering fluid leaksConditions hardened seals — restoring their flexibility and reducing minor leaks
  • Stabilises PAS fluid to prevent foamingFoaming fluid causes the pump to cavitate and whine — anti-foam protection eliminates this
  • Provides smoother steering throughout the full lock rangeRestored fluid properties mean smooth, consistent steering feel from lock to lock
  • Can be used as a top-up fluidSafe to use as a power steering fluid top-up as well as a treatment added to existing fluid
  • Meets and exceeds commercial pump manufacturer standardsFormulated to the performance specifications required by power steering pump manufacturers
The chemistry

How Does Forte Power Steering Treatment Fix Whining and Stiffness?

The treatment works on two levels simultaneously — restoring the fluid properties that cause noise and stiffness, and conditioning the seals that cause leaks.

Power steering whining is caused by cavitation — the pump drawing against fluid that has lost its viscosity and is foaming under pressure. Air pockets form in the fluid and the pump compresses them rather than moving fluid, causing the characteristic whining or moaning sound. This also causes pump wear as the bearings and vanes operate without proper lubrication.

Forte Power Steering Treatment restores the viscosity improvers that have broken down in degraded fluid, adds anti-foam protection to prevent cavitation, and replenishes the anti-wear additives that protect pump components. The result is fluid that moves correctly, lubricates properly and allows the pump to operate quietly and efficiently.

The seal conditioning chemistry penetrates hardened rubber seals throughout the system — rack seals, pump seals, hose connections — restoring their flexibility and allowing them to conform correctly to metal surfaces and stop weeping.

The chemical cure — Forte Power Steering Treatment. Showing how the treatment restores fluid viscosity and anti-foam properties to eliminate pump whining, and conditions hardened seals to reduce minor leaks.
Compatibility

Is Forte Power Steering Treatment Compatible With My Vehicle?

Forte Power Steering Treatment is compatible with all conventional power steering systems and LHM hydraulic systems — including Citroën vehicles where it provides specific benefits for the hydraulic system seals.

For conventional power steering systems add to the power steering reservoir alongside the existing fluid. For Citroën vehicles and other LHM hydraulic systems add to the hydraulic fluid reservoir — it specifically conditions the rubber seal between the hydraulic fluid pipe and gas globe, which is a common source of leaks on older Citroën vehicles.

How To Use Forte Power Steering Treatment

Add to the power steering reservoir. No draining, no specialist equipment. Works through the existing fluid from the first use.

Add Forte Power Steering Treatment directly to the power steering reservoir alongside the existing fluid. The treatment begins working immediately as the fluid circulates through the system during normal driving. Improvement in noise and stiffness is typically noticeable within a short period of normal driving.

  • Add to the power steering reservoirNo draining required — works through the existing fluid
  • Use at every serviceRegular use maintains fluid quality and prevents problems from developing — far cheaper than pump or rack replacement
  • Can also be used as top-up fluidSafe to use as a power steering fluid top-up when the reservoir level is low
  • For Citroën LHM systemsAdd to the hydraulic fluid reservoir — the same product works for both conventional PAS and Citroën LHM systems
Common questions

Every question about
Forte Power Steering Treatment, answered.

My power steering whines only on full lock — is that the fluid?
Yes — whining specifically on full lock is a classic symptom of degraded power steering fluid. When on full lock the pump is working hardest — moving fluid against maximum resistance. Degraded fluid that foams under this pressure causes the pump to cavitate and whine. Forte Power Steering Treatment restores anti-foam protection and eliminates cavitation, which eliminates the whining.
How much does it cost to fix power steering?
It depends on the cause. If it's degraded fluid — causing whining, cold stiffness or minor seeping — a bottle of Forte Power Steering Treatment is by far the cheapest fix. A failed pump or rack runs into the hundreds, sometimes over a thousand pounds with labour. Because fluid-related symptoms are so common, treating the fluid first is the logical low-cost step before paying for parts.
Can I keep driving with noisy power steering?
A light whine from degraded fluid isn't an emergency, but ignoring it lets the pump cavitate and run hot, which shortens its life. If the noise is a grinding or growling rather than a whine, or the steering goes heavy and stays heavy, stop and get it checked. For a fluid-related whine, treating it early with Forte Power Steering Treatment is far cheaper than a pump.
My steering is heavy when cold but fine when warm — is this the fluid?
Yes — this is a textbook symptom of degraded power steering fluid. Fresh fluid maintains consistent viscosity across temperatures. Degraded fluid thickens excessively when cold, making the pump struggle to move it until it warms up and thins down. Forte Power Steering Treatment restores viscosity stabilisers that prevent this cold-temperature thickening.
Is there a difference between power steering whining and power steering pump failure?
Yes. Fluid-related whining typically responds to Forte Power Steering Treatment — the noise is caused by cavitation in degraded fluid rather than mechanical failure. Mechanical pump failure produces a grinding or growling noise rather than a whine, often accompanied by heavy steering that does not improve when warm. If symptoms suggest mechanical failure, a mechanic's diagnosis is needed.
My Citroën has hydraulic suspension — will it help with that too?
Yes. Forte Power Steering Treatment is compatible with LHM fluid systems and specifically conditions the rubber seal between the hydraulic fluid pipe and gas globe — a common source of leaks and stiffness on Citroën hydraulic suspension systems. It is also listed as compatible with hydraulic jacks and rams using the same LHM fluid.
How long will it take to notice an improvement?
For noise and stiffness — improvement is often noticeable within a short period of normal driving as the treatment circulates through the system. For minor leaks — improvement takes longer as the seal conditioning chemistry needs time to penetrate and restore seal flexibility through multiple heat and pressure cycles. Monitor over a week of normal use.
My power steering has a big leak — will this fix it?
Forte Power Steering Treatment addresses minor seeping leaks from hardened seals. A significant leak — one that drains the reservoir noticeably between checks — indicates a physical failure of a pipe, hose, seal or the pump that requires mechanical repair. For minor weeping leaks it is worth trying first. For significant leaks, see a mechanic.
